And naturally for that matter, where are you? Yes, some of you are in distant nooks of the planet but with nearby friends perhaps!
Thanks to the many for the support in my daughter’s & her boyfriend’s car crash recovery. We are after all, fragile yet tenacious!
The Supper Club & BluGuru with London guests !!
This be the (pre)Wedding Tour for Josh Bennett & Parvyn Kaur.
Starts at the Capitol Theatre, Tamworth this Monday and 8 days and 9 shows later we are in Adelaide preparing for the 20:11, 20/11/2011 wedding moment.
Pianist extraordinaire, Tom Donald joins us from London on the opening shows at theTamworth Capitol Theatre.
This is particularly timely as the release of our London Abstractions CD & DVD has just arrived.
Come early and see it on the big screen!! Featuring my “Big Pics” Australian Series panoramic scenes – some built from up to 24 images !
CD/DVD Launch
We were completing the Totally Gourdgeous European Tour in September and as is my norm when passing through London, catch up with Tom Donald.
He immediately suggested we at least manage a gathering for a few hours and see what happens before we all disappear again.
Tom had yet to meet Mal Webb and so a plan was hatched. On a previous visit I’d spotted a Sitar in his Studio corner and we soon had a long lasting MySpace track embraced with piano. This time Regular & Bass(!) Clarinet (Mark Buckingham) would meet the Gourd Bass (Webb), Violalin (5-string Fiddle) and the humble Gourdalin all entwined with Tom’s ever surprising Piano inventions. We all seemed to dig into our own dreamtimes and are still grinning from the experience.
I’ve found the music goes particularly Thai food, Red wine and the Australia landscape. Thus the DVD sprang into existence almost from necessity and feature 100 of my ‘Look at Australia’ panoramas with a few mirthful images tossed in at the music’s insistence!
The Capitol & Smithurst Theatre shows will also include intwined performances of BluGuru (15 instruments between us), Emily Little (Fiddle with attitude), Jess Stocker (Swiss Hung, Macedonian Drum, Greek Tamborine and more), Brooke Schiemer (finally with her beloved accompanist, Tom Donald – with both her own & songs from her stage history!) & Steve O’hern (the sweetest tapping of the acoustic guitar to be heard). Pic attached below. And you know what? I’m sure there will be more surprises in the night!

Hi most wide ranging friends, associates, fans and wanderers via BluGuru/ Totally Gourdgeous/ The Lawnmowers/ The Supper Club/ Dya Singh/ Fiddlers Feast & more
Hope you can join me somewhere in the next months to blend old times & new, adventure & contemplation covering 50 years.
Turning 50 has a curious feeling of renewal and “did that really happen?”!
Four very different daughters , now 17 to 28, another 5 step siblings over a recent decade, an ex-wife, partners & lovers, of great time, intensity and experience & learning (I/ they we hope). And now life from a bold Berlin perspective much of the time.
My 18th was around the bar at home in Panorama, SA with some still close friends; 21st celebrating together with about 6 Gemini friends at St Andrews Hall in Unley with two of my bluegrass & similar bands – Remnants & Nuclear Shoes! 30th and few others leading up round that time with big handdrawn cards and stories from the many in Tamworth town.Married in 88 – honeymoon from Adelaide to Tamworth, Sydney to Melb and home then was Koyuga VIC. Then came the horse era in the Moonbis, followed by m ajor event of 6 months at the World Expo, Seville in 92. I become party to about 6 bands around 98 who tour variously across the planet still.40th in San Francisco & LA touring with Dya Singh World Music Group. 44th party tour -Tamworth, Syd, Melb, Canberra & Adelaide, 2008 a merry Bday gathering in Fremantle. And 8/8/08 sets changes in motion that reshaped my life and love. Dad passes on in 2009 while I’m at his sister’s funeral with all his Rellies in north Germany.
And now with new band BluGuru as well as 3 of the other main 4, (most mentioned below) will join me in my 50s lap!
Through it all, many of you have been part & parcel to the adventures, ups & downs, corners & surprises. It’s time to come gather where possible. I’ve mapped out a trip from Canberra through Sydney, briefly to the Gold Coast the New England towns out as far as Moree and eventually across to Adelaide for my actual 50th birthday Party /Free Concert at the Governnor Hindmarsh Hotel show room on Sunday 5th of June, then my brothers 49th & Mums 80th before landing in Paris/ Berlin for the following 2 months of touring, living and the love in Berlin. Phew! Details are below
But I am hoping some of you can pass this on to others who have been to (or should go to, ha) or are a part of these 50 years that would add to the surprise of the tour.
There is opportunity to meet most of my bands/ worlds along the way. BluGuru/ Totally Gourdgeous/ The Lawnmowers/ The Supper Club and many co-performers as well. See the links at the bottom of the page.
Some folk have asked what I’d like at this auspicious occasion, and I believe I’m aiming do get a nice suit and long armed, narrow shirts to habit over my next decades. But I’ll be most happiest if folk will love the Big Pic Series of images (some of which can be enlarged from Postcard to 5 metres wide (some examples can be found at link and panoramio) enough to invest. They’ll be at the Gigs or in The Van parked outside and certainly on the web
But mainly it’s a case of you just Being There!

It was certainly a strange sensation to be at a festival of such magnitude while so much of Australia was either burning, flooding, and then cyclonic – and now Perth too, man! Many friends were doing their best in those places being helped or helping many others in the most remarkable ways. Our hopes of steady recovery go to them all.
*****Coming up soon Adelaide Fringe Gigs for BluGuru!
First of all thank you so, so much, those who came again & again through the Tamworth Festival week last month to our 13th Supper Club. The North Tamworth Bowling Club is in the process of renovations and fortunately they have kept the unfinished changes out of the Festivals way (and drink prices!). We were blessed with maintained attendance from last year with a large amount of word of mouth new folk, despite a tendency across the Fest of reduced turn out and even cancelled gigs for some bands! Yikes! Leaves me all the more grateful for all your faithful attendance/ spreading the word, and feeling we are doing a few things right. I do read and consider the suggestions in the Questionaire/ Mailing List form! Some thoughts are of-course easier to implement than others. To see the Pics, history & such go to http://www.myspace.com/andrewclermontssupperclub & http://www.andrewclermont.com.au/specialevents.htm#tamfest (my fav pics from Sunny, Ross & Peter) and on Flickr.com look up Ross Waldron for a best-of from his shots this year. I’ll put more up soon.
Don’t forget there is a Season Ticket ($180) which gets you 5 free shows. I strive to keep the surprise element strong though-out the week which includes getting performers to take us though a good selection of their material and potential personnel over their appearances. It is not possible to have such a variety show feature any particular contributor for long sets but realising the Supper Club is itself a “festival”, it seeks your attendance always more than once if not often, to give the bigger picture. We thrive on a youth zing factor and time for them to chill together and produce the gold, to mix with the cauldron of fest spice!
The Being There BIG PICS

And while on that subject, curiously : This year I made an extra push from my visual arts direction specialising in Panoramic photos taken with up to 24 photos to capture the view eg when standing at the base of a glorious waterfall and need to turn halfway round and from straight down to straight up to take it in. An interesting challenge to get the ooh ahh onto paper. 6 BigPics sold this year during the festival with orders for more – thankyou! The web presence of these will build through the year.
http://www.andrewclermont.com.au/sales.htm
Keep in mind also between now and June and again in Sept variously to the end of the year, BluGuru – Parvyn Kaur Singh, Josh Bennett & I will be touring and are right now taking in suggestions for Shows, Workshops (music & dance), House Concerts, and corporate options – anywhere, but especially between Adelaide, Melb, Syd & Brisbane paths.
Here is a wRap up of the Supper Club for Jan 2011.
Highlights were many
– Flatfoot vs Indian Classical Kathak Dance Off with Claw-hammer Banjo vs Sitar ! Whitetop Mountaineers vs BluGuru – a great fun event.
– Macedonia played FLATOUT – taking no prisoners – it was grab a chord/bunch of notes and hang on! (Now I’ve heard that before somewhere!) – and it’s all on video tape! Woohoo!
– Fund-raising for the QLD Flood victims with the Quatro String Quartet from Bundaberg – over $500 raised in 2 x 3 song visits and another $800 at the Golden Fiddle Awards, Quatro performance.
***We duly thank the supporters of the Supper Club & GFA for their generosity and a big Yay for Quatro and particularly Brinderella Airlines for sponsoring their flights all the way down around the flooding.
– local legend photographer, Peter Brown, donated an extremely artful photo of our resident Banjo man, Montz Matsumoto to the hallowed North Tam Bowlo venue, received by the honourable Ted Trainor. Our best wishes go with Ted as he progresses with his cancer treatment.
– we soared with the re-meet of Tullara Connors with Steve O’Hern as they gave John Butler’s tune, Oceans, few solid journeys – once also accompanied by Paddy Montgomery on Irish Bourzouki – triple string wild! (See the New Supper Club 2010 CD!)
– A wonderful card up the sleeve this year as well was the humble Tim Bennett on Bass who’s accompaniment was beautifully sublime with equal moments of astoundment with his tapping and ‘nothing’s too hard’ techniques, harmonies and super vibe!
– the glorious Harmonica Night – truly a ‘must see’ on the first Sunday. From the ‘dexteric’ Tony Eyers Bluegrass tunes to Christian Marsh’s unsurpassed beauty of soaring note and definitive attitude. They top & tail a total feast with this year featuring the blow & suck Aussie style the empowering Mark Atkins on Didgeridoo, taking time out from symphonic tours with Phillip Glass and that most extraordinary Winter Olympics Opening with Ashley MacIsaac. Just some of the feast we get to share at the Supper Club.
But let’s look at the main flavours at this year’s Supper Club –
Tamarisque – The Gordon family band from Adelaide returning by great demand, which also brought with young lefty Paddy Montgomery (cheeky and most photogenic!), and the equally left Bennett Bros Tim & Josh – now engaged to Parvyn Kaur Singh. That of course meant that young SA fiddler, Jeri Foreman was not going to be left out as one way or another, another Supper Club Fellowship variation grew again. These folk all from Adelaide meant a few pre-fest linkups were possible to tease and taunt one another into quite a wider range of orchestrations.

The followup with fellow SA banjo man, Matsumoto, in Tamworth, proceeded with further elaborate and sensitive pieces of multi-culturism. The Gordons, between keeping Paddy on the straight & narrow, lol, and ever ready with piano to take a piece just a little further, were also invited as surprise Finale guests at the Golden Fiddle Awards where over 20 fiddlers united in a newish classic piece, “Death by Triple Fiddle”. Meanwhile Quatro trolled the revelling audience for the Flood Appeal post their standing ovation. pre-finale pieces. Also at the Awards with whirling flatfoot dance steps and traditional playing, were our special Sup Club guests from West Virginia,USA, The Whitetop Mountaineers. http://www.goldenfiddleawards.org.au/ . It was their 3rd visit here and by now they are pretty much family!! Martha & Jackson also come into our Youth ‘section’ – an essential push with the Sup Club. And though they gave a wholesome flavour with Old-time hillbilly music, the second half of the week saw a rather extreme Banjo challenged “Coolgrass” group from Melbourne. Theatrical mayhem & lyrical, musical challenge, and a whole lot of laughs a minute.
Triple CD Launch
It was also the first time for my newly named & recorded, genre jumping trio BluGuru with Parvyn & Josh. We gave the CD the name of the last 2 year’s tours – Ragas 2 Blu Riches – with specific spelling. Brooke Schiemer, many years now in the Supper Club team, was also invited to contribute to the BluGuru recording, made at Enrec Studio in Calala, Tamworth. Thus her first recording is there and simultaneously I mixed down the Live 24-track recordings from The Supper Club last year which also featured much of Brooke Schiemer’s vocals within the first highlights released from those, gulp, 30 hours captured. “Andrew Clermont’s International Supper Club 2010” I anticipate this is the first of 3 CDs to come from the best 3 hours found therein!! eg the Piano Night with 4 pianos circling Golden Fiddle winner, Cathy Fraser, with a La Bottine Souriaunte piece with ricochets from Jess Stocker, Pete Fidler, myself and Liz Frencham on Upright Bass – or the twin Dobro beauty of Chris Rogers (Mildura) & Pete Fidler (Melb) – but see below for more detail.
Also finally we had the arrival of the Tamarisque 4th CD – Swan Song. A very hearty 19 tracks! A fitting (thus far) finale to a wonderful era of family music.
And great to see it them all selling well. Naturally if you missed out on any, just let us know.
The YOUTH – how they inspire!
Over the years we have been sooo touched by the efforts the youth have gone to to present ideas & works, or just share their enthusiasm & technique – usually well beyond their years. The outside seating around the North Tamworth Bowling Club is often packed with musical intrigue. Occasionally players like Jess Randall from The Crooked Fiddle Band or Wu PuYu (long time Flautist & Concert Pianist with the Supper Club), will write a score for the multitudinous players or even a 4 part String section around Michael Fix led by Savannah Jo Lack has happened before! But then by now you do know to expect the unexpected ! This year we had the Swiss Hung (Steel Drum), Sitar, Synth Guitar, assorted double & fretted Basses, Pedal Steel, Octave Mandolin/ Mandola/ Beatbox/ tapping Bass & acoustic guitars, a sudden rivetting Czardas performance from previous Youth No-Holds-Barred Fiddle Champ, Emily Little; I had the pleasure of backing Chloe Nott as she won 2011 Bluegrass Encouragement Award Winner after the Coolgrass boys surrounded her at The Supper Club as a closely following rhythm section. Jess Stocker kept the East European rhythms flowing in and around the weeks music with her Darabuka drum and Swiss Hung – looking forward to mixing down more of last year’s recordings to reveal the solace of this unusual soft steel drum.
Special surprise was young 5 string banjo lass, Taylor Pfeiffer with a powering voice and Australia issues in her heart – at 11 years old she a great inspiration for young and old.
How it runs & the Mandolin invasion!
The Week runs with 2 separate shows a night from Sat to Sat. At 6pm (bar Friday) is a Mix-of-All-the-Nights smorgasbord and at 9pm we focus into a particular theme or Instrument. It should be noted that the ever adaptable Mandolin has sprouted dramatically at the Supper Club being able to sneak in as cousin to Fiddle, Guitar & Piano (quite the honky-tonk sound) and so entwined with Banjo & well, why leave out the Harmonica here, which it perfectly blends with! It is thus the perfect Chameleon and achieves feature every night (10 Mandolinists this year)!!
The Supper Club reached a new record this year! Over 80 contributors! Including 18 Youth (Y)
Brooke Schiemer (Tamworth) – Voice, Piano & Accom
